Gregory Benford is a science fiction writer and astrophysicist at the University of Irvine California. He is best known in science fiction circles for his Galactic Centre Saga started in 1977 which revolves around a galaxy where organic life is in constant war with sentient mechanical life. Benford's work is primarily hard science fiction and often incorporates science based on his current research projects. In 1980, his novel Timescape won the Nebula Award, and his short stories have been nominated for Hugo awards on numerous occasions. He has also claimed to have created and written about the first computer virus in the 1960s.
