Man has made his match....Now it's his problem.

1982

Genres:
Sci-Fi, Action

Starring:
Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Daryl Hannah, Edward James-Olmos

Summary:
In the nearby future, Deckard (Ford) is a bladerunner, a policeman whose main job is to hunt and kill outlawed replicants. Replicants are genetically manufactured human simulants who used to reside offworld, working until their programmed termination date. Deckard is more than ready to retire, but he is drawn back into the force when he is hired to hunt five replicants who have hijacked a ship and escaped to Earth where they seek their creator.

Deckard searches the bleak and polluted city for the replicants, stumbling upon an ecclectic and mysterious group of characters including the enigmatic and sensual Rachael (Young). With their help, Deckard gradually finds each replicant until he confronts the leader, Batty (Hauer) and Pris (Hannah) at the end. Through them, the meaning of life and the definition of humanity are questioned.

Response:
Ok, so with Harrison Ford starring and Ridley Scott directing, you'd think this movie would have so much action and energy that you'd leave with a new hairstyle. A high-impact combo of Star Wars and Alien? Not so.

Bladerunner is a moody journey through a polluted and dismal view of the future. I saw this movie first when I was a kid, and I loved it. When I saw it again more than a decade later, I kept waiting for something to happen. Where was the spectacular spaceship scene? Where was the action-packed car chase? Where was the off-color blood and guts of the replicants.

The truth is, Bladerunner is a sci-fi movie without much action or special effects. Whereas Star Wars asks how many humans it takes to overthrow an evil galactic empire, Bladerunner asks what it means to be human. In this way, the movie kept true to the book upon which is was based, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick.

Ford's portrayal of Deckard is wonderful. He's cynical, tired, and wracked with conscious over his mission. Hauer is a brilliant Batty, free-spirited and dying. The only character i didn't like was Rachael since Young played her so stiffly that she came across like a bit of a bitch. Other than that, I have no complaints.

So it's not a rollicking rocket journey, but Bladerunner is a subtle classic with an important theme that crosses the boundaries of sci-fi. In addition, it serves as a warning about the possible future. This movie bleakly examines the potential perils of genetic engineering and our own definitions of humanity and souls.

Point Blank
Rent it. Watch it. Think about it.

Blade Runner

I always thought the title of Bladerunner was spelt as "Blade Runner" - the downfall of watching priated movies (side blurb: As a result of pirated movies, I was under the impression for many years that Van Damme starred in a movie called Cyber6. I later found out it was called Cyborg).

Where is Sean Young now?

Sean Young

After Bladerunner, Sean Young did Dune and then decided she was A-list material and could throw mini-tantrums with various directors. Apparently she couldn't, and her career 'cooled' according to Wikipedia. I guess that's a nice way of saying it went down the toilet.
